When should a child visit an orthodontist?
A child should visit an orthodontist between six and eight years of age. Often, behind an acceptable smile an anomaly can be hidden which, if discovered early, is easier to resolve.
Some symptoms indicating a child should visit an orthodontist:
- Protrusion of front teeth
- Premature or delayed loss of baby teeth
- Lack of jaw space for all teeth
- Deep bite, thumb sucking
- Difficulty chewing or swallowing
- Difficulty speaking or pronouncing certain sounds
- Teeth grinding
- Missing teeth (when a tooth never erupted)
Diagnosis and Treatment Plan
Diagnosis is established based on plaster models analysis, panoramic and cephalometric x-rays. Based on this, the orthodontist proposes a treatment plan and type of appliances.
After detailed clinical examination, intra and extra-oral photographs are taken along with X-ray analysis. Then software analysis defines key points and performs measurements. Jaw impressions are taken so the orthodontist gets detailed insight into both teeth and facial appearance.
Types of Orthodontic Appliances
Removable Appliances
Used for children during intensive growth. They suppress bone anomalies during growth. If worn conscientiously, tooth extraction can often be avoided.
Fixed Appliances
Mostly used in adults for cosmetic improvement of tooth position or bite correction. There is no upper age limit.
